Artist Statement
I am interested in how energy flows through living forms and patterns in nature. I think about the fluidity of living cells and how they connect to each other, and I envision them layer, over layer, over layer. As I imagine this bio-cellular world, I layer swatches of collage papers, paint, scrape, and draw into and on the wax. My intent is that the colors, shapes, and lines jostling in space would reflect a dynamic of motion like the pulse of life. It's the mystery of these hidden layers that intrigue me.
I work with encaustics because it satisfies the urge to layer and see through traces underneath. I am lured by the mysteries I perceive. I paint as a way of responding to existence. Through my aesthetics, I search for ways to follow my curiosities about life. With no answers, the search is endless, the engagement is continual, and the process satisfying.
